AMHERST — For the first time in school history, everyone in the country is looking up at UMass.

The Minutemen earned the No. 1 ranking in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online poll that was released Monday. UMass (12-1-0) received 26 of the 50 first-place votes and 964 points overall to edge out St. Cloud State (22 first-place votes, 959 points) for the top spot in the poll.

The ascent continues a season of firsts for the program under third-year coach Greg Carvel. UMass has ridden a school-record nine-game win streak from unranked in the preseason to the top of the polls, setting the program’s best ranking three times in the last four weeks.

The Minutemen’s 7-0-0 start in Hockey East is by far their best record to begin a conference season and their 12-1-0 start is also the best in program history.

UMass, which beat Connecticut 7-4 on Friday at the Mullins Center, closes the 2018 portion of its schedule with three games in five days, beginning with a home-and-home series with No. 8 Quinnipiac on Friday and Saturday. The first game will be played in Hampden, Connecticut, before the two teams return Saturday to play at 7:30 p.m. in Amherst. The Minutemen conclude 2018 on Dec. 11 against Yale at home.

INDIVIDUAL ACCOLADES: Freshman forward Bobby Trivigno was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week on Monday after scoring twice in the 7-4 win over the Huskies. It was the second multi-goal game of his young career and included a penalty shot goal that provided a timely insurance marker for the Minutemen.

Also Monday, freshman goalie Filip Lindberg was named to the roster for Team Finland’s pre-tournament training camp ahead of the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship later this month. He will report to camp on Dec. 15 with the final roster being announced on Christmas Eve during which the Finns play two exhibition games. The tournament runs from Dec. 26 until Jan. 5 in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia.
