BELCHERTOWN — Police are on the lookout for a suspect who reportedly shot a deer from a field near several houses.

That’s according to a post on the police department’s Facebook page, which says that on Saturday at around 4:47 p.m. an unknown person shot a deer from a location near 900 Federal St. The shooter was on the edge of a field “well within” 500 feet of nearby houses, and there were multiple houses through the tree line at the back of the field, according to the post. The suspect was gone before witnesses could get out to the field.

“Witnesses stated they then saw a vehicle slow down as if it was going to pull over in the area but then take off when the operator observed them entering the field,” the post reads. “The vehicle was last seen heading towards the center of town on Federal Street.”

Police said that the vehicle is a red Ford F-350 flatbed truck that might have a ladder rack in back.
